Artemis Fowl - The Characters We Love

So lately I've been plowing through the Artemis Fowl Series by Eoin Colfer.   Yeah. Yeah. I know it's from the young adults section again but I'm just going to have to admit that I prefer my leisure literature to be easy going and rated PG.  I spend the rest of my day reading news feeds, text books, software books, etc. and just before bed my brain needs something a little more on the light and fluffy side.

So anyways,...
I was turned on to these books because of the ravings of my roommate about a particular character, "Butler".  Yes. That is his name.  From my roommates description, he's something like a smarter, more sophisticated, highly trained version of Kronk Pepikrankenitz from the Emperor's New Groove. Yeah,... I had a hard time believing it too,... but it's true.

Here are a few short takes on other character's I've loved reading about.

Artemis Fowl II

  • The main character. Not always the bad guy but rarely the good guy, and yet... somehow I'm alway rooting for him.  I can't say he's a great standard in moral judgment but he is a 12+ year old evil boy genius bent on making money through exploitation... Enough said.  He's Awesome!

Mulch Diggums

  • A support character but has got to be my FAVORITE.  An old criminal dwarf who seems to get into EVERYTHING.  Pardon my CAPS but I get excited.  It seems that this guy's whole character is based off of eating, stealing, and crazy/incredibly useful bodily functions.  What a wonderful combination!  Some characters use high tech (Batman), others use super powers (super man), a few even use magic (Harry Potter).  Mulch leaves me smiling on every page. :)

Foaly

  • I think that every geek can relate to Foaly.  He is, of course, the under appreciated techno genius centaur that works for the fairy police force.  On the other hand, Foaly leaves a few of a us to shame when it comes to techy know how.  I think that every geek will read about Foaly and think, "Someday, I'll be able to hack security cameras, satellites, and look up people's profiles all at once, just like that centaur."

Commander Julius Root

  • OK, not the most funny character to read about, but deserves honorable mention because he's just sooooo easily imagined.  With not too many words Eoin has provided us such great imagery of this guy that it makes reading pages just fly by.  Root is the epitome of the red in the face boss that is soo high strung and energetic that he drives all of this subordinates bonkers.  Can you see it now?

OK! So I'm totally leaving out one of the most key characters of all the books (Holly Short).  But I had to leave something to reader ;) Enjoy.
